ANY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR DRIVING IN FARO?
The Portuguese drive on the right and overtake on the left. When driving your hire car in Faro, give way to trams overtaking you or approaching from the right. Do not pass stationary trams at a tram stop until you are certain that all passengers have finished entering or leaving the tram, where there is no platform for passengers to alight, cars are required by law to give way to passengers making their way to the pavement.

In rural areas of Faro, the locals still use animal-drawn carts, which are slow moving and unlit, so be alert when driving your hire car - especially in bad visibility/at night.

Portuguese roads can be three lanes wide, but beware - the middle lane is sometimes used for overtaking from either direction.
 

WHAT SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT PARKING IN FARO?
In Faro you cannot park within 18 meters of a road junction, 15 meters of a bus stop or within 3 meters of a tram or bus stop. You must park your hire car facing the direction of the traffic moving on your side of the road. In Lisbon, it is useful to have a Blue Zone Parking Disc, available free from local police.


HOW MUCH DOES FUEL COST IN FARO?
At the time of writing a litre of petrol cost approximately 0.9 Euros. Your hire car will most likely take unleaded petrol which is called gasoline sin plomo or gasoline sem chumbo. Diesel is called gasóleo and LPG is called gáz líquido.


WHAT IS THE SPEED LIMIT ON PORTUGUESE ROADS?
For experienced drivers (held licence for more than 1 year) the speed limits for driving your hire car in Faro are as follows:-

There is also a minimum speed limit of 40KPH (24Mph) on the Motorways unless otherwise indicated.

The speed limits in Faro as restricted for inexperienced drivers. If the driver of the hire car passed thier driving test less than 12 months ago they must apply to the ACP (Automovel Club de Faro ph 0035 1356 39 31), the Portugese motor club, for a yellow disc that denotes this, and it must be displayed at all times in your vehicle. The disc has number 90 on it, which refers to the restriction of 90 kph (56mph) which is the speed you must keep to at all times.

If driving your hire car in Lisbon, watch out for the 25 de Abril Bridge (linking Lisbon with the south bank of the Tagus River at the end of the Vila Franca de Xira motorway), as the speed limit when crossing it is 30-50kph (18-31mph).


ROAD TOLLS IN FARO
Toll, translated into Portuguese, is portagem. At road tolls you may notice green lanes, these are for drivers who have subscribed to an automated paying system. Make sure you have currency to hand to pay for tolls, because if you are unable to, you will be fined. Visitors to Faro are required to pay traffic fines on the spot, and they can be expensive. The toll payable on the 25 de Abril Bridge (linking Lisbon with the south bank of the Tagus River at the end of the Vila Franca de Xira motorway) is payable by southbound traffic only.

WHAT ARE THE SEAT BELT REGULATIONS IN FARO?
In Faro seatbelts are compulsory in the front and rear, since your hire car will be fitted with both. Children under the age of twelve years of age must travel in the rear of the hire car.


WHAT IS THE ALCOHOL LIMIT IN FARO?
The blood/alcohol limit in Faro is 50mg, which is considerable less than the 80mg limit in the UK. A blood/alcohol reading of more than 120mg in Faro will result in imprisonment, so be safe, and don’t drink at all before driving your hire car.
 

CAN I USE MY DOMESTIC LICENCE IN FARO?
Only if you hold both parts of a valid European licence, non-European licenses must be accompanied with an International Driving Permit.


WHAT DOCUMENTS MAY I NEED TO CARRY?
When driving your hire car in Faro, you must carry with you, your Driving Licence, the Rental Contract, and Proof of Insurance which will be provided by our local car hire supplier. The vehicle must also have a red warning triangle in case of emergency, which is placed at the rear of the car in the event of an accident or if you breakdown.


PARKING
When parking, your hire car, you must be facing the same direction as the traffic, the exception being if a road only allows parking on one side of it. If you park illegally your hire car may well be clamped. Do not park in close range of a bus or tram stop or of a road junction (18 metres distance is required from a road junction). In Lisbon you can obtain a Blue Zone Parking permit disc which is free, and available from the local police.
