Hiring a car is by far the best way to get around in Latsi, especially since the Cypriots drive on the left hand side of the road throughout the island (same as in the UK).  This remains one of the legacies of British rule, despite the fact that in both Greece and Turkey, they drive on the right hand side of the road !!
 

SOME TIPS WHEN DRIVING YOUR HIRE CAR IN LATSI
Road signs indicate the speed limits with Motorway signs in green and normal signs in blue. Most of the distances and speed limits are posted in kilometres and km/h respectively. Speed limits are generally as follows unless road signs indicate otherwise:

Drive your hire car, observing the maximum and minimum speed limits set by law, and drive at a speed in which you are able to stop safely, on your own side of the road and in the distance you cansee to be clear. Any traffic violations in your hire car will inevitably be charged back to you.
 

TRAFFIC LIGHTS
The traffic light sequencing and rules in Latsi will be familiar to most people. However, many local drivers will drive over the white line and well into the junction before stopping. They may not stop at all. Failing to comply with the red light is a common occurrence.

So when driving you hire car in Latsi, do not assume that if your light is green it is safe to go. Always treat traffic light controlled junctions with extreme caution and ensure that you can change course, slow or stop if necessary.


JUNCTIONS
When exiting from a side road in Latsi, ensure you can see and that other drivers can see you. If you can't, edge out slowly to get your view. Unfortunately, vehicles often travel at excessive speeds on narrow roads.

Bear in mind that causing you to slowdown, swerve or stop are considered normal by many locals in Latsi who are trying to get out of a junction or crossing your path.


SEAT BELTS
Your hire car will most likely be fitted with front and rear seat belts, and so it will be compulsory for ALL passengers travelling in the hire car to wear a seat belt.

ACCIDENTS

FUEL
Motor fuel for your hire car can be bought at petrol stations throughout Latsi. One of the best things is that fuel prices in Latsi are roughly half the price in the UK. Premium petrol (super) and unleaded 35-40 cents per litre
Regular grade 35-40 cents per litre
Diesel 10-15 cents per litre.

Most petrol stations close on Sundays and public holidays, however, petrol stations in the Capital and all seaside areas are equipped with 24-hour petrol vending machines, where you enter your card details and the amount you want to spend. Tell the machine which pump number you are using and the pump will stop when it reaches the correct cash amount and you simply drive away in your hire car.


PARKING
Numerous places to park your hire car can be found in town centers, charging about 50 cents for a half day’s parking. Parking meters charge approx. 20 cents an hour and no fee is required on Saturday afternoons, Sundays and Public Holidays.


PLANNING YOUR JOURNEYS
Leave sufficient time for your journey allowing for traffic and weather conditions. Leaving late tends to result in excessive speed, fines and accidents.
